For many, hair is more than just an accessory; it's a part of our identity. If you have natural curls, you know the struggle to embrace your unique look. While society often glorifies straight hair, many of us have found pride in our beautiful spirals. This post will guide you on the road to self-acceptance, share practical tips for boosting self-confidence, and celebrate the incredible beauty of natural curls.

My Journey to Self-Acceptance

Growing up with curly hair, I often felt out of place since most of my friends had straight hair. Many of my friends, peers, and even teachers would ask if they could touch or play with my hair because it was so "exotic". At first, I didn't mind it, but as it happened more and more, I began to realize how uncomfortable and invasive it felt. People would even reach out and just play with my hair without even asking for my permission making me feel uncomfortable. I would often have to ask people not to touch my hair without my permission; after all I'm not some petting zoo animal they can pet. Because of this, I often felt like I needed to straighten my hair so that people wouldn't touch it all of the time. I remember begging my mom for a flat iron in middle school so that I could straighten my hair whenever I wanted. She tried to warn me that straightening my hair all of the time would damage my curls, but I didn't care; I just wanted to fit in and not have people touching my hair so often.

When I finally got my hands on a flat iron, I started straightening my hair. Initially I loved it; it was so much easier than having curly hair. I didn't have to worry about styling it or making sure it wasn't too frizzy or too poofy, and best of all, people weren't grabbing and playing with my hair anymore. Life was good. That is until I had to wash my hair again. The curls came back and everything went back to the way it was before. For a time, all I could think about was how easy and simple it was to have straight hair.

It wasn't until the summer going in to my freshman year of high school that I really decided to embrace my natural curls and stop fantasizing about having flat, boring straight hair, (sorry straight hair girlies, but its true). I spent days researching and watching videos about different tools, products, and methods I could use to help me learn how to wash and style my curly hair. I tested different tools, products, and methods for months until I found what worked best for me, and finally, I had a routine. Instead of trying to put my hair in some sort of up-do to hide my curls, I started wearing it out because I was finally proud of my curls! I embraced my curly hair and its natural beauty, and in doing so, I found myself! This transformation encouraged me to embrace my natural beauty and focus on self-appreciation rather than fitting in.

Now I want to help out my fellow curly girlies on their journey to loving and embracing their beautiful curly hair! Let's go!

Tips for Boosting Self-Confidence with Curly Hair

1. Find the Right Products

Finding suitable products for your curly hair can often be a struggle, so here are a few general tips to help you find the right products for your hair.

  • Avoid products with sulfates, parabens, and silicones—they will strip your hair of its natural oils which your hair needs to stay healthy.

  • Instead look for products with ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil, aloe vera, glycerin, and argan oil—these ingredients will help seal moisture into your hair and add a natural shine.

  • Look for products specific to your curl pattern—many curly haircare brands have different products based on hair type and curl pattern.

  • Conditioner! Conditioner! Conditioner!—do your self a favor and get both a leave in conditioner and a deep conditioner. Leave in conditioner will help detangle your hair and lock in moisture. Deep conditioner also adds moisture and strengthens your hair to help prevent frizz and breakage, and it improves elasticity.

  • Test out different types of styling products for your hair—you never what works best until you try it. I personally like to use a light gel, but others like to use a cream or mousse.

Experiment with various styling products and test different combinations to discover what brings out the best in your unique curls! (Be on the lookout for future posts about products in the next few weeks!)

2. Develop a Signature Routine

Creating a hair care routine tailored to your curly locks can significantly boost your confidence. Consider integrating methods like the “plopping” technique after washing. This involves placing your curls in a t-shirt or micro-fiber towel to absorb excess water while maintaining their shape. For added volume, try using a diffuser attachment when blow-drying your hair. Again, test out different techniques and routines until you find what works best for your hair. A reliable routine can significantly enhance your curls, making you feel more confident! (Lookout for future posts about styling techniques and developing a routine in the next few weeks!)

3. Experiment with Hair Styles

Your curls offer endless opportunities for creativity! Embracing a variety of hairstyles can be a fun way to showcase your personality and show off your curls. From loose updos to defined ringlets, explore various styles that highlight your curls. Consider incorporating accessories like headbands or colorful scarves for added flair. Enjoy experimenting until you find looks that make you feel beautiful.

4. Surround Yourself with Positivity

Connecting with a community that celebrates curly hair can be a game-changer in your self-confidence journey. Sharing your experiences while receiving support from like-minded individuals can strengthen your resolve to love your curls. Remember, you are not alone on this journey and DWCG is here for you!
